When you think of top notch universities that are breaking through boundaries and creating new plans for student learning, you may not immediately think of Arizona State University. You should. There are waves being made in the world of higher education in Tempe. ASU has over 68000 students attending classes on four campuses and online as well. The students who seek their degrees at ASU are part of a new era in university programs.
The current President and board of the university have realized that no longer can individuals get ahead by merely completing coursework that revolves around text books. Not only have they taken learning out of the classroom and out into the world on an international level, they've seen the future and know that today's economy calls for new, exciting ways for people to create their own paths in the future.
It takes book sense and a true sense of entrepreneurial spirit to get ahead in the world today. There are ever changing winds blowing through the business world and it is no longer enough to just get by on your brains. You need to have a good business sense and a keen eye for the obvious when it comes to opportunities. The main goals of ASU are to be the best at teaching, research and public service in the country. So far, so good. ASU students complete more public service hours than any other university in the United States.
The University was started in 1885 under some different terms than the school operates under today. Originally name the Tempe Normal School, students were originally high school aged and had no other education. John Samuel Armstrong had a bill passed through the house that enabled the school to be founded.
Currently, the over sixty eight thousand ASU students attend classes on campuses located in Mesa, downtown Phoenix, NW Phoenix and Tempe. The original campus is located in Tempe and more than half of the student body attends courses there.
With an eye on public service and the betterment of those in the immediate area, ASU lives up to it's promise of a good post secondary education for those who show initiative. Unlike most universities, ASU sticks to a very lenient admissions policy. Those Arizona residents who are of college age and are graduating in the top 50% of their high school class will be accepted to the University. This allows more people to empower themselves with education than any other state.
Arizona State University President Michael M. Crow came to office in 2001 and has been pushing the envelope ever since. He's introduced the schematics for a new kind of education system, deeming it "the New American University." He promises to create a unique environment that promotes learning and personal growth.
